Dr Marthin Els is an experienced specialist urologist at Mediclinic Cape Gate, who regards his doctor-patient relationships as important in achieving successful outcomes. He places particular emphasis on taking time to understand and explain planned medical and surgical approaches to improving health. Dr Els aims to deliver patient-centred, evidence-based and affordable care to all his patients.
Dr Marthin Els was born in Pretoria, grew up in Kroonstad in the Free State and obtained his medical degree from the University of the Free State. He spent his years as a junior doctor in East London, spending more time during community service in General Surgery and Urology.
He was then employed as a medical officer in the department of urology of Tygerberg hospital, before starting his specialist registrar training at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg hospital under the tutoring of professors Chris F Heyns and A vd Merwe. He completed his final examinations in 2018 and was awarded his MMed degree in 2018.
He started private practice in 2018 and is currently practising at Mediclinic Cape Gate, also performing surgical procedures at Mediclinic Durbanville.
He has published articles in peer-reviewed international journals, has presented at multiple local and international congresses and in 2012, at the South African Urological Association congress, was awarded the Bard prize for best presentation by a registrar.
He is married and has three daughters. His hobbies include playing golf and reading, and he enjoys spending time with his family.
Dr Els specializes in the evaluation and treatment of conditions affecting the urinary system, the male reproductive system and women’s and children’s urological health.
Complete male urological service, including treatment of diseases of the prostate, male sexual dysfunction, kidney stones, male infertility, vasectomy and circumcision and surgery for renal, bladder and testis cancer. He has special interest in endourology (camera-directed procedures) and in the treatment of prostate cancer and brachytherapy of the prostate.
Female patients are commonly seen for conditions affecting the urinary system, including urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections, pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder, haematuria and kidney stones.
All paediatric urological conditions are evaluated and treated, including foreskin problems and circumcision,urinary tract infections, undescended testes, hernias, bedwetting and inborn abnormalities of the urogenital tract. Complex conditions are treated in consultation with an academic specialist, contributing to the expertise of the practice.
Dr Els is certified to perform all urological procedures.
He is also a certified robotic surgery assistant. His practice offers robotic surgery and laparoscopic surgery if indicated, in conjunction with a certified and experienced robotic/laparoscopic surgeon.
Consultations and surgical procedures are charged for at basic medical scheme tariffs, with no extra charges.
The practice is contracted with all major medical schemes and most smaller schemes. Claims to your medical aid fund will be submitted on your behalf.

How do I make a Urologist appointment and what can I expect during my visit?
Our office is located in Brackenfell, Cape Town at Mediclinic Cape Gate. Room 205, 2nd floor.

Please try to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment to complete the needed documents.
Feel free to bring one or two family members to the consultation.
You should be prepared to discuss all your questions with us, have a physical examination and give a urine sample.
Sometimes it is necessary to go for further tests, such as blood tests or CT scans.
Will my medical aid cover my urology consultation and procedure and how much is a consultation?
We are contracted with most medical aids. You can enquire when you make an appointment. We only charge the basic medical aid tariff, and submit your consultation or procedure fee directly to your medical aid.
If you don’t have a medical aid, the consultation fee is R850. An additional R700 is charged if an ultrasound needs to be performed at the time of consultation.

Can I email my medical questions to the urologist?
We do respond to email, but it’s reserved for administrative purposes. We do not give medical advice via email. We will try to respond within 24 hours. Should you not receive a response, please follow up telephonically. Please allow longer for prescriptions, reports and blood test request forms.
What can l do when I have an emergency?

Do I need a referral letter from my GP?
Depending on your medical aid, you might need a referral from your GP. Please call or email our office if this is needed. If you have seen another doctor, it might be helpful to bring any relevant documentation prepared by that doctor with you.
A urologist is a doctor who specializes in medical and surgical diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive system.
The organs in the domain of the urologist include the kidneys, ureters, urethra, adrenal glands, bladder, prostate, penis, testicles and vas deferens.
Urology is a surgical speciality, but it combines the management of medical conditions, such as urinary tract infections with the management of surgical conditions such as bladder or prostate cancer, kidney stones, congenital abnormalities and traumatic injury to the urogenital system.
You may make an appointment or be referred to a urologist if you have:
• Trouble urinating, including getting started or having a strong flow of urine, pain, cloudy urine or blood in the urine (haematuria)
• Changes in urination, like frequent urination or feeling like you always have to go
• Trouble getting or keeping an erection (erectile dysfunction)
• Infertility
• A feeling that something is falling down into your vagina or heaviness in that area (bladder prolapse)
• Pelvic/testicular/penis pain
• Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
• Inability to control urination (urinary incontinence)
• Conditions of the male reproductive system, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (non-cancerous, enlarged prostate)
